A surprise meeting with a nomadic film duo tells our story
Around Easter time we received an email from a couple who had travelled all the way from Germany, across Africa, in an old VW campervan. An epic journey! Zoe & Merlin turned out to be pretty famous documentary producers (TheFilmPeople), and were collecting stories along their 2 year adventure across the continent. Having come across our surf project, they were keen to tell our story in a short documentary. Several meetings, visits to the project and the beach, plus having Shane guide them through the boys’ home community of Vrygrond, and a narrative started to form.
The timing of this was great, as we had a big development happening at the time. Lele, our Head Coach, was having alot of trouble at home and was in serious need of a place to stay. As an integral part of our program, we decided to draw out of the NPO savings and build him his own small house on the Surf Lounge property! Now he has a place to call his own, to keep his belongings, and the dignity of his own safe space, within our bigger Safe Space!
We are super thrilled at how the documentary came out, and it was very well received. It also generated a few wonderful donations from the community.
Thanks Zoe & Merlin! You guys are awesome!
