A fundraiser film night to inspire the children of Local Surf with their surfing icons

A very successful first Action was held on 20 April 2023 to bring in urgently needed funds to keep the Local Surf Lounge Academy operating, paying rent being the dire need! Through a largely European network we pulled in ZAR13,200 (€650) and put on a great evening for the kids of the club.

Here’s the intro from the fundraiser page:

** Please note – Virtual Tickets are to support the event, attendance is for the kids. Digital downloads of the films available to all supporters via email on 21 April**

The Local Surf Lounge & Academy is a surf-inspired safe space for the youth from the heavily disadvantaged communities surrounding the surf hub of Muizenberg, Cape Town.

The project does great work with big impact, but has severe financial challenges. With the help

of Small Things Foundation and local surf heroes, we are putting on an urgent fundraiser to keep the doors open!

On April 20 we will host ‘Inspire the Youth’ a social & movie night for the boys & girls of Local Surf. Things like TV’s and Wifi are not part of many of their homes. And we have some local legend Surf Stars who will personally talk and present their films to the groms.

To make this happen we ask YOU to buy a **Virtual Ticket** for R100 to help make this event happen. Not only will you be doing something great for a less fortunate surfer, but will also receive the 3 films being screened, to watch at home.

The event will start with a blessing from co-founder Shane Lentoor, paying respect to this land, and the proud heritage if the First People who walked it for centuries.

Film 1 – ‘Taking back the waves’

Directed by Nic Hofmeyr, starring Cass Collier & Ian Armstrong. Cass Collier is a respected elder & activist in the surf community, who grew up in the same Cape Flats community, who despite apartheid laws and restricted access to beaches, went in with Ian to become Big Wave World Champions at Todos Santos. Cass will open the screening and chat to the groms.

Film 2 – ‘Everything to me’

Directed by Wasted Talent, starring current rising star Joshe Faulkner, who hails from the tough neighbourhood of Pelarus in J-Bay, and is making big name in Hawaii and around the world. Joshe will tell the kids how he started, and what its like surfing on the world tour.

Film 3 – ‘Our Turn’

Directed by Social Negligence, we watch the story of local aerialist Paul Samson, who learned his craft on this very beach and had become a super talent with great potential. Paul shares his high performance edit with the audience.

The youth will all receive a hearty, healthy Veggie potjie (stew), and have a space to chat about the movies anongst each other and with their heroes. Then we bundle them into the minibuses and take them all home, stoked and hopefully inspired!

Help us help these young surfers, children are innocent victims of adult actions. We can’t change the past, but we can change the future. IF WE EACH DO A LITTLE, ALOT CAN BE DONE!

.*all funds raised are administered by the Small Things Foundation non-profit organisation, primarily to cover Local Surf Lounge Acadamey rent, but if more comes in we will put it towards our Mini-Ramp fund for the club.
